When it’s cold outside, there’s nothing like a warm and savory bowl of soup. But too often soups come with an overload of calories, fat, and sodium, while also lacking in quality protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Rotating IsaLean Soups, which have the same nutrient profile as IsaLean Shakes, into your Isagenix system can be key to getting the right “fool-proof” nutrition to keep you going on track to achieving your New Year’s goals.
However, as Isagenix food scientists and product developers advise, it’s important to avoid a few common mistakes when making soups. Fact is, there is indeed a right way (and a wrong way) to make IsaLean Soup and it can mean a world of difference for having the tastiest experience.
Start with the Directions – Water First
When following the directions for IsaLean Soup, on either Butternut Squash or Wild Creamy Mushroom, you’ll notice it reads “Add 1 packet of IsaLean Soup to 8 fl. Oz. (250 mL) of hot purified water and whisk for 30-60 seconds.” Why does it suggest adding to pre-heated water? Does it really matter?
“When you put the water in first in your cup or bowl it’s allowing the powder to disperse evenly, which prevents the consistency from being clumpy,” says Isagenix Product Development team member and nutritionist Ashley Patterson. “This is an important first step. It’s also best to fold the powder into the water instead of just dumping it all in. This allows for more surface area for the powder to disperse in and results in a smoother, less clumpy consistency.”
Among other ways to increase smoothness and creaminess, Patterson says, “As the directions point out, it’s best to use a whisk for mixing the soup. But if a whisk isn’t available, then a fork works pretty well because it acts like a mini-blender.”
An IsaShaker bottle can be used to get an ideal consistency with no clumps in the soups, adds Yuhua Chen, Ph.D., Senior Manager of Product and Manufacturing Processes at Isagenix. “This is because the whisk ball has an agitating effect and essentially whips and blends the soup powder into the water.”
When asked why IsaLean Soup shouldn’t be prepared in a blender (including IsaBlenders), Dr. Chen says, “It’s never a good idea to conceal hot liquid in a blender or any other sealed container because it can cause a mini explosion when the container or blender is opened.”
How Hot is Too Hot?
As some customers who’ve used IsaLean Soups are sure to have noticed, the soups can be sensitive to too much heat or heat applied for too long. There’s also a fine line between hot and too hot when preparing IsaLean Soups. While the directions read hot purified water, how hot is that exactly?
According to Patterson, “You want the water hot, but not too hot that you couldn’t put your finger in it. You definitely don’t want strong boiling water. If you have a thermometer, shoot for water that’s cooler than 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Without a thermometer, warming water in a microwave for about 45-60 seconds generally will get the water at an ideal temperature.”
As to why too hot of water can be problematic for the soups, Dr. Chen adds, “The main thing with water that’s too hot is it causes protein and enzyme denaturation and starch gelatinization. These three factors will result in a very clumpy, gooey mess of a soup.”
For anyone who’s tried heating IsaLean Soup mixed already with water in the microwave or who’s added soup mix to boiling water, that explains a lot. If using the stove to heat water, heat the water first, but wait for the temperature to come back down to what’s ideal before adding in the soup powder.
Let Flavor Develop
One of the many great things about the soups is that they taste great as is, but there are ways to maximize taste and possibly get creative with them. According to Dr. Chen, “After mixing the soup powder and water, its best to wait about two minutes. This allows the flavor profile to fully develop.”
Having experimented with soups extensively both at work and in her own personal kitchen, Patterson adds, “There’s a lot that can be done with the soups. Using them as is for a meal is great, but they can also be added to other foods and recipes. I like to cook up veggies and add them to the already-mixed soup along with some chopped garlic.”
Patterson suggests getting creative as one likes, but keeping to the rule of not using too hot of water. So if using the soup powder in recipes or using it as a foundation for more ingredients, mix the soup at the ideal temperature and then add in the other ingredients, whether cooked or not.
It doesn’t take being a food scientist to make the best IsaLean Soup—just follow the directions, maybe get creative, and bon appetite!
